Vol. 84 No. 3

Committee on Finance. - Vote 41—Local Government and Public Health.

I move:—

Go ndeontar suim Bhreise ná raghaidh thar £10 chun íoctha an Mhuirir a thiocfaidh chun bheith iníoctha i rith na bliana dar críoch 31adh Márta, 1942, chun Tuarastail agus Costaisí Oifig an Aire Kiaghaltais Aiteamhail agus Sláinte Poiblidhe, ar a n-áirmhítear. Deontaisí agus Costaisí eile i dtaobh Tógáil Tithe, Deontaisí d'Udaráis Aitiúla, Ildeontaisí Ilghnéitheacha agus Ildeontaisí-i-gCabhair, agus muirearacha áirithe mar gheall ar Ospidéil.

That a Supplementary sum not exceeding £l0 be granted to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending 31st March, 1942, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Office of the Minister for Local Government and Public Health, including Grants and other Expenses in connection with Housing, Grants to Local Authorities, sundry Miscellaneous Grants and Grants-in-Aid, and certain charges connected with Hospitals.

This Estimate is to meet expenditure in connection with the holding of examinations for qualifications as sanitary inspector and for recoupment of certain expenditure incurred by public assistance authorities as detailed in the circular letter of 26th March. Deputy Norton asked a question in the House as to whether, where people, lowing to the operation of the Unemployment Period Order, may have to apply for home assistance, there would be any recoupment by the State? I informed him, in reply to that, that a circular was being issued to local authorities, that local authorities would be recouped one half in cases where they could show that payments were made as a result of the operation of the Unemployment Period Order. It is to do that that this Supplementary Estimate is brought in.

Just for form's sake, would the Minister say how much he experts this to cost?

We say £10,000, but we do not think it will cost so much.

You think it may be less than £10,000?

Yes. With turf schemes and food production, it may be much less.
