Vol. 84 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing Industry.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what steps, if any, are being taken to develop the fishing industry; if, further, any applications have been made during the past 12 months for help to purchase or hire fishing boats.

I take it the Deputy refers to the sea-fishing industry, which is, largely, the responsibility of the Sea Fisheries Association. I am handing him some literature (including the latest annual report) dealing with the-activities of that body, from which it will be evident that the directors have been utilising to full advantage the moneys placed at their disposal for the purposes of general development and the supply of boats and gear to members.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Minister aware that the demand for boats has not been met?

The Deputy might be surprised to know that the demands have been met.

Mr. Byrne

My information, is different.

Well, that kind of thing will always be happening, but these are the facts.
