Vol. 84 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Labourers' Cottages in Wexford.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that a number of labourers' cottages in Wexford which are in a very bad state of repair have not yet been inspected, and whether he will state the cause of the protracted delay in carrying out the necessary inspections.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that a number of labourers' cottages in Wexford which are in a bad state of repair have been inspected some time ago, but repair work has not yet begun on these cottages and whether he will take immediate steps to have the repair work carried out so that the cottages may be rendered habitable before the coming winter.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that in a number of cases where repairs have been carried out on labourers' cottages in Wexford, these repairs have proved definitely unsatisfactory, and whether the Minister will now state if in every case the repairs executed on these cottages were inspected before the contractors' account was paid and, if not, will the Minister arrange to have these unsatisfactorily repaired cottages inspected now and the matters complained of by the tenants rectified before the coming winter.

I propose to take questions 5, 6 and 7 together. There is no information in my Department which would support any of the statements made in regard to labourers' cottages in County Wexford but if the Deputy will furnish me with definite particulars as to the location of the cottages coming within the categories he mentions, I will bring the matter specially to the notice of the Wexford Board of Health.

Have I not brought this question before the Minister several times? I have been reporting these cottages for the last four years. There are some cottages which have been reported for seven or eight years and which are in need of repair, but they have not even been inspected.

I wrote to the Deputy on the 5th April in regard to a number of cases, giving the report, which showed that the Minister's information is correct.

I would ask the Minister to go around and see them for himself.

Are there not inspectors in the county?

This is a bit of "codology".
