Vol. 84 No. 11

Offences Against the State (Forfeiture) Bill, 1941—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the Offences Against the State (Forfeiture) Act, 1940.—(Minister for Justice.)
Second Stage ordered for Wednesday, 16th July.

Is it intended to get these Bills through before the Adjournment?

Mr. Boland

This Bill simply seeks an extension of legislation we have already. It merely extends it for another year. The 1940 Act expires in September. The other Bill that I have introduced may not be so necessary, but I should like to get it through if it is possible.

What does the Minister mean by introducing such a measure at this hour of the day?

Mr. Boland

The Gárda Síochána (Compensation) Bill deals with the provision of compensation in respect to Guards who were killed in the performance of their duties. The present law does not cover them. There has been considerable trouble in getting the various details examined and arranged.

Why introduce the Bill at this period? Had you not the whole year in which to do it?
