Vol. 84 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milling Difficulties in Iveragh.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the farmers in Iveragh are not possessed of local milling facilities and that in some cases grain has to be taken 40 miles to be milled, and if, in view of this fact, he will make representations to the Dairy Disposal Company with a view to the installation of a milling plant at Caherciveen central creamery.

I understand that milling facilities in the area mentioned are inadequate in view of the difficulties of obtaining equipment and supplies of fuel oil, and it is doubtful whether milling facilities can at the moment be provided in the area. I shall cause further inquiries to be made in the matter.

Is the Minister aware that small milling plant of the type suggested would cost £100 or £150, and the benefit accruing would be very extensive? Hundreds of small farmers would benefit very much from the installation of that type of plant, which would help to tide them over the emergency period.

I am not sure if the equipment can be got, and there would be further difficulty with regard to supplies of fuel oil.
