Vol. 84 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Tea.

asked the Minister for Supplies why, if he sanctioned an increase of 7d. per 2 cwt. bag for sugar owing to the small quantity of sugar available, and the increased cost of handling did he restrict the margin of profit chargeable on tea when supplies of that commodity were reduced by 80 per cent. and merchants were required to sell it in 1/2 ounce packets.

An increase of 7d. per 2 cwt. bag in the wholesale price of sugar has not been sanctioned by me. Such an increase has, however, been effected by the traders concerned without consultation with my Department and without authority and I have issued instructions to have this increase cancelled forthwith.
