Vol. 84 No. 16

Offences Against the State (Forfeiture) Bill, 1941—Second and Subsequent Stages.

I move that the Bill be now read a Second Time. This Bill is a continuation of legislation that was passed last year. The original intention was to have it made permanent, but there was a wish expressed to have it annually, so we passed it for one year. The Act expires on the 3rd of September this year and this Bill is introduced to give it currency for another year, to the 3rd September, 1942. Under the Act various sums of money were seized, one amount consisting of 20,000 dollars. We also seized eight motor cars, some duplicating machines and other things of that description. There is a right of appeal. If anyone objects to articles being seized, he can go to the courts, but so far there has not been any objection.

Did you get any petrol?

Mr. Boland

No. There might be some in the tanks, however.

And those things are the property of the State now?

Mr. Boland

Yes.

What was done with the 20,000 dollars—was that amount given to the Exchequer?

Mr. Boland

Yes.

Question agreed to.

Agreed that the remaining stages be taken to-day.

Bill passed through Committee without amendment and reported.
