Vol. 85 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pigs Producers and Increased Bacon Price.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the fact that permission has been granted to bacon curers to increase the price of cured bacon by 11/- per cwt. he will ascertain from the Pigs and Bacon Commission what proportion of this increase it is intended to pass over to pig producers.

The price of bacon is fixed by the Department of Supplies, not by the Pigs and Bacon Commission.

The commission announced increased prices for pigs on 1st October last. This action, coupled with the widening of the grade of pigs coming within Class I and within Class II, gave producers a substantial increase in the price of pigs. It is understood that this increase was one of the factors taken into account in arriving at the price which may be charged by curers for bacon.
