Vol. 85 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Turf in Listowel.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that since June last best quality black turf is being delivered in the town of Listowel at 25/- per ton; that this price covers the cost of producing and transporting the turf from the bog to the town—a distance of five miles; that the railway officials at Listowel quote 16/9 per ton as the freightage on turf from Listowel to Kingsbridge; whether, in view of these considerations, he is prepared to fix for the turf sold to the poor of Dublin a lower price than 64/- per ton.

It is not possible to meet the turf requirements of Dublin from the Listowel area, and it has been found necessary to transport turf from areas such as Mayo involving freight costs higher than 16/9 per ton. The price of 25/- per ton at Listowel is comparable with the prices charged free on rail at loading points in other areas.

The cost of turf delivered on rail at Dublin is not the final cost, as handling and delivery charges must also be added. In this connection I would refer the Deputy to my answer given to-day to Deputy Maolchatha's question relating to turf prices.
