Vol. 88 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages of Workers in Tipperary.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the weekly wages paid to labourers at present working on the Ballyholohan and Knockerrin estates, Emly, County Tipperary, and what are the weekly wages of all other labourers working on land improvement schemes in County Tipperary.

The wages paid to labourers employed by the Land Commission on the Ryan and O'Connor estates at Ballyholohan and Knockerrin, County Tipperary, are at the rate of 30/- per week—the same rate as is paid to labourers employed by the Land Commission in other parts of County Tipperary.

Owing to the exceptional conditions at present obtaining in the Ryan and O'Connor estates, a. supplementary subsistence allowance is paid to labourers brought from other districts who have been engaged at work on these estates.

What is the subsistence allowance or what is the reason for it?

Owing to local agitation against the scheme of division of the Ryan and O'Connor estates approved by the Land Commission it became necessary to bring labourers and gangers working as labourers from other districts and to accommodate them in the town of Tipperary, whence they are transported daily to and from Ballyholohan. To compensate them for these conditions a supplementary subsistence allowance of 25/- a week is paid at present to labourers and 1/6 per day to gangers.

Does the Minister think it wise to continue to foment the agitation there in view of the fact that the thing has been purely constitutional from the beginning?
