Vol. 89 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Engineering Union's Application.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he received the report of a tribunal which sat on August 20th, 1942, to hear an application under Emergency Powers (No. 166) Order made on behalf of certain members of the Irish Engineering Union employed by the Cork Dockyard Company; whether the application was upheld by the tribunal; and, if so, whether he will state the reason for his failure to promulgate a decision in this case; and, further, whether he is now in a position to say when the application will be sanctioned.

I have received the reports of the tribunal which sat on August 20th, 1942, and on subsequent dates to hear an application under the Emergency Powers (No. 166) Order, 1942, for a Wages (Standard Rate) Order, made on behalf of certain members of the Irish Engineering Industrial Union, and of other unions, employed by Cork Dockyard, Limited. I was unable to accept the recommendation in the first report of the tribunal and requested the tribunal to report again. A second report was made by the tribunal on November 16th. On the 3rd instant I made a Wages (Standard Rate) Order applying to boilermakers, platers, riveters, holders-up, caulkers, electric welders, shipwrights and labourers. Copies of this Order were issued to the interested parties on the 4th instant.
