Vol. 89 No. 1

Written Answers. - Unemployment Insurance Acts.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of each of the last three years for which the information is available (a) the total payments made to recipients under the Unemployment Insurance Acts; (b) the average weekly payment, and (c) the total cost of administering the Acts.

The total payments of unemployment benefit in the last three years were as follows:—

£

Year ended 31st March, 1940

726,684

Year ended 31st March, 1941

794,148

Year ended 31st March, 1942

879,046

As regards (b) it is not possible to give the average weekly payment but it can be said that the average amount paid, per payment made (normally weekly) in the three years ended 31st March, 1942, was approximately as follows:—

As regards (c) the information asked for is not available as the administration of the Unemployment Insurance Acts is combined with that of the Unemployment Assistance Acts, the Labour Exchange Act, etc., and a reliable allocation of costs between these would not be possible but the amounts appropriated in respect of the cost of administration of the Unemployment Insurance Acts were as follows:—

Year ended 31st March, 1940

£188,018
