Vol. 89 No. 3

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Stall-fed Cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will endeavour to arrange with the British Food Controller for a better price for stall-fed Éire cattle, as the present price is unremunerative and will result in our cattle being shipped as stores and thus make considerably more money, but with consequent injury to the tillage drive through loss of much-needed farmyard manure.

I am satisfied that no useful purpose would be served by making further representations regarding the price fixed for cattle purchased by the British Ministry of Food in the period ended 30th June next.

Is the Minister aware that our store cattle are making a bigger price in England than our beef cattle, and is he also aware that where cattle are fed in the open there is no farmyard manure, and that we must have such manure in order to preserve the fertility of our soil?

I agree with the Deputy's first statement, but not with his second statement, and therefore the other question does not arise.

Does the Minister not agree that there is more money for our stores in Britain at the moment than for stall-fed cattle?

The Deputy has forgotten his second statement.

I know that more money is being got for stores.

That is doubtful.
