Vol. 89 No. 3

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the tenants on the O'Connor Nolan estate, Mynish, County Galway, have no turbary rights; and can he say whether it is the intention of the Land Commission to provide them with bogs this year at Dooletter or Knockboy or elsewhere.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the economic condition of the smallholders on the O'Connor Nolan estate, Mynish Island, County Galway, is very much aggravated by the fact that their holdings are in scattered patches; and whether he can say if it is the intention to have these holdings rearranged this year or at all; and, if not, can he say whether it is proposed to migrate some of the Mynish tenants; and, if so, when such a solution of this problem is likely to be applied.

I propose to take together the Deputy's questions relative to the estate of O'Connor and Nolan. Representations have been received by the Land Commission that a number of tenants on the estate of O'Connor and Nolan, County Galway, Record No. S.5873, are in need of a turbary supply. The matter has been under consideration, but arrangements for the provision of turbary are difficult and tedious, and it is not possible to say whether the tenants can be provided with bogs this year at Dooletter or Knockboy or elsewhere. The operations of the Land Commission are hampered by lack of staff due to emergency conditions. As regards the rearrangement of the holdings in question, it has not yet been found possible to acquire suitable lands with which the rearrangement might be carried out. The Land Commission are not in a position to state when these holdings will be rearranged, and there are no proposals at present before them for migration of any of these tenants.
