Vol. 89 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork County Council Road Workers.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has received representations from the Cork County Council and subsequently from the Cork County Manager asking for sanction for an increased wage for all road workers and carters employed by the county council, and if he is prepared to sanction the proposed increase of 5/- weekly.

Representations were received in November last for an increase of 5/- a week to all grades of road workers. The wages paid to road workers by the Cork County Council have been above the general level of wages of road workers throughout the country and the representations were not acceded to. Some of the road workers have received increases since September, 1939. The position of road workers who have not received an increase since September, 1939, is at present under consideration.

Can the Minister indicate any date when a decision will be given on this matter?

I could not commit myself to a date, but it is under consideration.

In view of the fact that the county council estimate will be prepared in a week or two and that that will be a vital matter for consideration in connection with the estimate, will the Minister try to hasten it?

I shall bear that in mind.
