Vol. 89 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Paraffin Oil—G.S.R. Allocation.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state the total number of gallons of paraffin oil allocated to the Great Southern Railways Company for use at its stations and depots situated in the Boroughs of Dublin and Dun Laoghaire, for four months, ending 31st January, 1943; and whether it is not possible to persuade the railway company concerned to use electric light in the areas mentioned and thereby make more paraffin oil available for use in the rural areas where electric light or gas cannot be provided.

The Great Southern Railways are in receipt of allowances of kerosene to meet the requirements of the company's entire railway system for the following purposes:

(1) Lighting lamps for signals, signal-cabins, crossing-gates, station platforms, shunters, guards' and milesmen's hand lamps, train head and tail lights, plumbers' and painters' blow lamps, etc.

(2) Motor-boats.

(3) Stationary engines at various stations and hotels.

I am unable to state how much kerosene is used in stations and depots situated in the Boroughs of Dublin and Dun Laoghaire, but I am informed that the quantity used for which electricity could be substituted is infinitesmal.

Has the Minister made any representations to the company for the purpose of persuading them to use electric light? Is he aware that one of the central stations in the city is partly lighted by electricity and partly by gas, paraffin oil and candles?
