Vol. 89 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Model School Gardener (Monaghan).

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that the cleaner and gardener at the Model School, Monaghan, has a wife and six children and is in receipt of wages to the amount of £1 9s. 1d. per week; and whether he will take steps to provide this man with an increased wage.

The workman in question, who is in receipt of 26/- per week, in respect of his services at the Model School, Monaghan, has been included amongst those to whom an emergency bonus of 7/- per week has been awarded by the Government, with effect as from the 1st January, 1943.

What is he going to get now—33/-?

26/- plus 7/- is generally 33/-.

The Minister broke his heart, with this 33/-. I thought he had 39/1 when I wrote to him. Would the Minister make it 36/-? Does he think it reasonable that an employee of the State, with a wife and six children, should be in receipt of 33/- per week, in this day and hour? Surely the Minister can do better than that?

It happens that his wife is also employed.
