Vol. 89 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Expenditure on Education.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the total sums contributed in the last completed financial year from Exchequer funds to (1) university education, (2) secondary education, (3) primary education, and (4) vocational education.

As the reply contains a number of figures, I propose to have it circulated with the Official Debates.

Following is the reply:—

The total sums contributed from Exchequer funds in the last completed financial year (1941-42) to the various branches of education mentioned by the Deputy were as follows:—

(1) University education (including grant-in-aid of £1,500 to Royal College of Surgeons)

£199,714

(2) Secondary education

£475,825

(3) Primary education

£3,778,390

(4) Vocational education (i.e., technical instruction and continuation education)

£326,087

The sums mentioned in (2), (3) and (4) above do not include the expenditure on administration and inspection. Provision is made for these services for all the branches of the Department in the various sub-heads of the Vote for the Office of the Minister, and while it is possible to indicate the amounts provided for each of the branches, it would not be possible without considerable labour to give an exact statement of the amounts actually spent since the expenditure from each sub-head is kept in one account and is not segregated according to the different branches.

The following amounts may, however, be taken as indicating the approximate expenditure on administration and inspection:— #

(2) Secondary education

£23,400

(3) Primary education

£124,000

(4) Vocational education

£28,250
