Vol. 89 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Offaly Roads.

asked the Minister for Finance to state the original estimated cost for the repair of the Kilnagall-Leabeg bog road, near Kilcormac, County Offaly; the total amount already allocated, and the year in which each sum was allocated; what further sum is required in order to complete the work in a satisfactory manner, and when same will be allocated and the job finished; also, why such a small scheme was not carried out within a reasonable period of time.

The original proposal in connection with the road referred to by the Deputy comprised (a) the repair of the two terminal ends which had already been constructed, and (b) the construction of a new road to connect these two ends. The whole of this work was originally estimated to cost approximately £3,000. The existing portions of the road at Kilcormac and Lea ends, respectively, have a measure of public utility independently of the making of the connecting link, and grants from the Employment Schemes Vote have been made as follows:—

1932-33

£200

for the Kilcormac end.

1933-34

120

,,,,

1934-35

70

,,,,

1935-36

50

,,,,

1940-41

80

for the Lea end.

Total

£520

It is not proposed to make a grant for the construction of a new road to connect the two ends for the reasons (a) I am advised that its public utility would not be commensurate with the expenditure, and (b) the unemployment position in the area would not warrant the making of a grant of £2,500 which is the estimated cost.

Consideration will be given to the making of a grant for carrying out further proposed work at the Kilcormac end in competition with any other proposals which may be received from the same area, and in the light of the unemployment position from time to time.

Why is not this scheme being carried out within a reasonable period of time?

Because all these moneys are expended on the relief of unemployment.

Is it because only a limited amount of money is being put into the pool for the purpose?

It is conditioned by the number of unemployed people there are in the area.

And the limited amount of money in the pool?

Not necessarily.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will state the estimated cost for the repair of the Cornamona bog road, near Banagher, County Offaly; the sum already allocated for this purpose; and whether same is sufficient to enable this small scheme to be completed in a satisfactory manner.

The estimated cost of the approved work of repair to the bog road referred to by the Deputy is £200. A grant of £100 was made in November, 1942, and a further grant of the balance in February, 1943.

It is assumed that the repairs for which these grants have been made will be completed within the estimated cost.
