Vol. 89 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation in County Galway School.

asked the Minister for Education whether he is aware that in the new schools erected at Dunmore, County Galway, only two classrooms have been provided in the boys' school for the accommodation of three teachers; whether he is aware that two of the teachers are compelled to work in one classroom, and that the classroom is capable of accommodating only 45 children, while the number under instruction varies between 80 and 90; and whether he will state what steps are being taken to provide an additional classroom in the boys' school.

It is not correct to say that two classrooms for three teachers were provided in the new boys' school at Dunmore. The new schools at Dunmore—one for boys and one for girls— which were planned in 1939 were completed in September, 1941. The plan of the boys' school provided for two classrooms—the enrolment and average attendance of boys not being sufficient for the recognition of more than two teachers. During the year 1942 the number on rolls and the average daily attendance at the boys' school considerably increased, with the result that a third teacher was recognised on the staff from the 17th November, 1942.

The position is being urgently examined and should it be found that the need for a third classroom is likely to be permanent the manager of the school will be communicated with on the subject.
