Vol. 89 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tubercular Cattle—Victuallers' Losses.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that frequent losses are sustained by victuallers on the discovery of tuberculosis in cattle already purchased by them and slaughtered, and the subsequent condemnation of the entire beast or of the affected parts without any compensation from any source; and if he has any proposals for the remedying of this state of affairs.

I am aware that parts of carcases, and on occasions whole carcases, of cattle are condemned after slaughter as unfit for human consumption on account of disease. The question of compensation for losses sustained by victuallers in such circumstances is not a matter for State aid. It is a trade risk which should be provided for by the victuallers themselves.
