Vol. 89 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bovine Tuberculosis.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what inducement is held out to farmers to surrender or destroy live stock infected with tuberculosis or other diseases; if he is aware that the inducement being held out is largely considered to be inadequate for the purpose; and if he has any proposals for the surer and more rapid eradication of bovine tuberculosis.

In the case of serious diseases, including foot-and-mouth disease, certain forms of bovine tuberculosis, swine fever, pleuro-pneumonia and glanders, where the slaughter policy is adopted for the purpose of eradication, compensation based on market value is payable to the owners of the animals so slaughtered by direction either of the local authority or myself. I am not aware that the compensation payable in such cases is generally considered to be inadequate. The relevant statutory Orders require the owners of animals affected or suspected of being affected with any of the scheduled diseases to report the matter without delay and owners should, of course, in their own interests, promptly notify the existence of disease.
