Vol. 89 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Country Hackney Owners' Petrol Ration.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state why hackney owners in the country towns have had their petrol ration reduced by 25 per cent., while taxi owners in the cities with same h.p. cars are receiving their full supply.

Owing to the limited quantity of petrol now reaching this country, I have found it necessary to reduce, as from the 1st March, allowances of petrol issued in respect of small public service vehicles (hackneys) exceeding 14 h.p. The restrictions are as follows:—Exceeding 14 h.p. but not exceeding 16 h.p.—From 24 gallons to 20 gallons per month. Exceeding 16 h.p.—From 32 gallons to 24 gallons per month.

These reductions have been applied to all hackney cars whether operating in the country or cities. The allowances issued in respect of hackney cars not exceeding 14 h.p. remain unchanged with a view to encouraging the use of smaller cars, which are more economical in the use of petrol.

No change has been made in the allowances of petrol issued in respect of taxis. These vehicles operate from a public hazard under close Gárdaí supervision, subject to a fixed scale of charges and conditions altogether different from those applicable to hackney vehicles.
