Vol. 89 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hospital Nursing.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he has had brought to his notice the Rushcliffe report on hospital nursing in Great Britain; and whether he will set up a commission to inquire whether similar reforms as to remuneration and conditions for hospital nurses in Éire are necessary.

I have seen a copy of the report referred to. Apart altogether from that report, I have been approached by organisations representative of the nursing profession to discuss questions of pensions and other matters. As regards the latter part of the question I am not in a position to make any statement on the matter at present.

Am I to take it from the Parliamentary Secretary's reply that the question of setting up a commission is at least under consideration?

No, I would not say that. I have stated that I am not in a position to make any statement on that aspect of the Deputy's question, but the whole question of the conditions of service will be discussed with representatives of the nursing organisations in the near future.

That is reasonably satisfactory.
