Vol. 89 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shortgun Catridges.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if arrangements can be made to have supplies of shotgun cartridges made available to farmers, as birds are doing very serious damage to grain crops all over the country.

Owing to shortage of raw materials, only very limited supplies of cartridges are available. It would be difficult to devise a practicable scheme for the reservation of a specific proportion of those supplies for farmers for the protection of their crops.

The manufacturers of cartridges have asked their customers to give preference to farmers who require cartridges for the protection of their crops.

I have sown a good deal of wheat and I find that the crows, starlings and other birds, are doing considerable damage to it. I could not get a cartridge in any shop. What has the Minister to say about it?

The total quantities of cartridges will be about one-sixth of the number normally available.

I could not get a cartridge anywhere. Many people find it heartbreaking in view of their efforts to feed the nation. Their crops are being ruined by the birds.
