Vol. 89 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Acquisition of Kildare Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the estate of Mr. Walter Hemmingway at Clane, County Kildare, comprising over 200 acres of land; and if he will state whether the lands are likely to be acquired and divided.

The Land Commission have not instituted proceedings for the acquisition of the estate of Mr. Walter Hemmingway and, owing to the emergency conditions, they do not propose to take any action at present regarding the acquisition of this estate.

In view of the size of these lands and the keen local demand by uneconomic holders and landless men for land, will the Minister make an exception in this matter and have the case specially investigated?

The Deputy is simpler than I thought he was.

Arising out of the Minister's last comment, which was not a reply at all, I can assure him that there is very keen interest in land in this area. The Minister might well avoid another Tipperary problem if he would now exercise the diligence which I know it is difficult for him to exercise at any time.

Since when, might I ask, has the Deputy formed the conclusion that events in Tipperary or elsewhere are going to modify the policy of the Land Commission?
