Vol. 89 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar for Jam-making.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that in the absence of sugar for jam-making, growers of soft fruit in East Meath and Dublin will suffer a serious financial loss; and whether, with a view to helping to maintain this important industry, the Minister will single out these areas for special treatment in the allocation of any available sugar.

It is not proposed to discontinue the supply of sugar for jam-making to the manufacturers and others who produce jam for sale. I assume that the Deputy has in mind the decision not to make any special issues of sugar in 1943 for the home-making of jam, and I regret that owing to the limited supplies of sugar available it is not possible to modify that decision. I am not aware that, as a result of the decision, growers of soft fruit in East Meath and Dublin will suffer serious financial loss.
