Vol. 89 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kildare Turbary Contract.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that Army authorities made a contract for turbary with small farmers in the Lullymore and Drimsnee area, County Kildare; and if he will say why only half the amount agreed to in the contract has been paid in each case.

I am aware that contracts for turbary were made by the military with certain persons in the Lullymore and Drumaru areas. Payments at the full rate agreed on (i.e., 7/- per Irish perch) were subsequently made to owners of a number of banks on which turf was cut by military personnel, but in certain cases arrangements were inadvertently made with the same persons in respect of banks which had been acquired by the Irish Land Commission under the Emergency Powers Order, and payments for turf cut and removed by the military from these banks will be made direct by my Department to the Irish Land Commission. The amounts to be paid to the persons whose turbary rights were acquired is a matter for the Irish Land Commission. I am asking the Minister for Lands to look into the matter with a view to expediting settlement of the claims.
