Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Fish from West Kerry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the difficulties experienced by the Cahirciveen and Dingle fish merchants by the refusal of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway Company to handle consignments of fish after 6.30 p.m., and that as a result of this arrangement transport of fish is delayed 36 hours; and if he will make the necessary representations to the L.M.S. Company and to the British Ministry of Food.

I am aware that delays are occasioned to fish traffic due to the refusal of the L.M.S. Railway Company to accept goods after 6.30 p.m. Representations have been made from time to time to that company, but the very considerable labour costs involved in any extension of time would not be justified by the quantity of perishable traffic concerned. Special arrangements have, however, been made in respect of salmon traffic, which can be dealt with by the very limited passenger train service of the Great Southern Railways Company.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the fish merchants concerned would be prepared to defray the increased costs involved in the handling of this traffic, and would he make representations on those lines to the people concerned? I think that if the matter could be reviewed in that light, in the Department, some satisfactory arrangement might be arrived at.

I have not seen any such proposals put forward, but if the fish merchants concerned are prepared to put up such proposals as the Deputy has mentioned, we shall have them examined.
