Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Kerry Piers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware of the great hardship imposed on fishermen and others by the present condition of the Point Pier, Valentia Harbour, which is the most important of its kind in South Kerry; and whether he will take immediate steps to have this pier repaired and provide landing facilities for boats engaged in fishing and in bringing agricultural produce from Valentia Island.

It is presumed that the Deputy refers to the slipway at Renard Point in Valentia Harbour. The slipway is reported to be in good order at present and it is not proposed to carry out any works of repair or improvement there.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that Keelcaveragh Pier, Portmagee, County Kerry, was severely damaged by gales last December, and is in urgent need of repair; and whether in view of the importance of this pier to local farmers who use it when drawing sand from Beginis Island for agricultural purposes, he will take steps to have it repaired at an early date.

Before consideration can be given to question of repairs to Keelcaveragh Pier, further engineering inspection will be necessary, and there is no prospect of arranging for such inspection in the near future owing to more urgent demands on the services of the technical staff available.
