Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portlaoighise Prisoners.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will say whether any, and if so how many, prisoners undergoing sentence of penal servitude in Portlaoighise prison are not wearing clothes, how long the practice has continued, and the longest period for which any of the prisoners concerned has been without clothes; further, whether he will state if a medical report had been called for concerning the health of the men involved; whether the report has been received; and, if so, what is the nature of such report.

There are nine prisoners in portlaoighise Prison who refuse to wear prison clothes. They wear instead garments improvised from blankets. The longest period over which this has continued in any one case is two years eight months. The prisoners are all in good health. I receive reports as to their condition at frequent intervals.
