Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Development of Tipperary Bog.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of the scarcity of developed bog in the Terryglass area of North Tipperary, he will take steps to develop this year the Muckloonmodderee bog in that area.

It is not proposed to make available funds for the development of Muckloonmodderee bog, County Tipperary. I am advised that the question of developing the bog has already been considered in connection with the emergency turf production programme and it has been decided not to proceed with its development for the reasons that (a) the turf in the bog is of inferior quality, (b) there is no scarcity of turbary in the area, and (c) the expenditure which the development of the bog would involve would not be justified.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that about 122 people are looking for bog there and are prepared to pay a reasonable price for it? Is he also aware that there have been different reports by the different inspectors who went there?

I am not so aware but, if that is correct, it is a matter for the Land Commission.

As to that, the same reply has been given by your Department and the Department of Lands.

I have no control over the Department of Lands.

The reports of the inspectors differ.
