Vol. 89 No. 13

Intoxicating Liquor Bill, 1942—Report of Conference.

I have to present the following Report from the Conference:—

"The Conference recommends that the Seanad do not insist on its disagreement with the amendments made by the Dáil to Seanad amendments Nos. 1 and 2 to the Intoxicating Liquor Bill, 1942."

I move:—

"That the Report do lie upon the Table; that the Report and Proceedings be printed." Ordered accordingly.

In connection with this report, the Minister for Justice, when speaking in the Seanad in connection with this Bill, intimated that he would discuss with the Minister for Industry and Commerce the question as to whether the opening hours proposed in the Bill would, in fact, be implemented during the currency of the emergency. As this is, perhaps, the last occasion on which members of the House will have an opportunity of speaking on this Bill, I would like to ascertain from the Minister whether, in fact, he has discussed that particular question with the Minister for Industry and Commerce with a view of not putting into operation the extended hours and, if so, what was the result.

Mr. Boland

I did not expect this question would be raised to-day. I understand that at a conference between representatives of my Department and of the Department of Industry and Commerce, the latter was not disposed to interfere with the opening hours set out in the Intoxicating Liquor Bill, and, accordingly, they will take effect.

Even during the period of the emergency when other shops are required to close early, the extended hours under this Bill will operate. Is that the position?

Mr. Boland

Yes.
