Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Turf.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that turf is being sold in midland towns at prices ranging from 3/- to 3/9 per cwt.; and if he will state whether he will take the necessary steps to see that a fair price is charged inside the turf areas.

I am aware that in a few Midland towns turf is being sold at a price as high as 3/- to 3/3 per cwt. I am not aware that the price has reached 3/9 per cwt. in any midland town. The high prices are due to seasonal shortage and it is probable that the position will correct itself with the advent of the new crop. I do not consider it practicable to control the price of turf in the turf areas. Persons living in midland towns in the bog areas should be able to produce their own supplies of turf, or to organise themselves, through parish councils or otherwise, to get turf at lower prices than those quoted in the question. I trust that the experience of the present season will result in greater individual and co-operative effort to produce sufficient turf in this season to meet full requirements for the ensuing year.
