Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Petrol for Turf Haulage.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that persons who have been making the winning of turf a commercial proposition during the past couple of years are now disturbed by the fear of petrol not being available during the coming season for the haulage of turf, and are inclined to give up this necessary work; and, if so, if he will state if petrol will be available for turf haulage.

I am not aware that any persons engaged in the haulage of turf are inclined to give up the business through fear of shortage of supplies of petrol. The allocation of petrol for any purpose is dependent on the arrival of supplies and I am not in a position to give any guarantee as to what supplies may be available during the coming season. I have, however, made arrangements for the allocation of sufficient supplies of petrol to meet the estimated needs of turf haulage during the coming season, should the supplies expected duly arrive.

Will the Minister say if that means making provision for petrol for parish councils who may endeavour to provide proper supplies of turf in midland towns?

That will depend on a number of circumstances. I could not answer the Deputy's question in the form in which he put it.
