Vol. 89 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter and Meat Supply.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what arrangements he is making to ensure a sufficient supply of butter and meat at reasonable prices for home consumers.

As the Deputy is aware, the demand for butter has, for various reasons, greatly increased. Every effort is being made to secure the production of adequate supplies to meet the demand and to ensure even distribution throughout the country. The question of the retail price of butter is one for the Minister for Supplies.

As regards meat, the position in regard to supplies of live stock in the country is constantly kept under review, while exports of beef, veal, pork, mutton and lamb are controlled by a licensing system. As in the case of butter, the question of retail prices for meat is a matter for the Minister for Supplies.
