Vol. 89 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - North Strand Bombing Compensation Claim.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that Mr. Arthur Fagan, whose home, 157 North Strand Road, was wrecked in the bombing and whose wife was killed, has been refused any compensation for the loss of his wife, and if he will cause his claim to be reinvestigated.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative. The answer to the second part is that the case has already been fully investigated and that the question of reinvestigation does not, therefore, arise. Compensation has not been paid in respect of Mrs. Fagan's death because no evidence has so far been brought to my notice which would justify my deciding that any person was dependent on her within the meaning of the scheme at the time of her death. I might add, for the Deputy's information, that arrangements for Mrs. Fagan's funeral were made by the Dublin Corporation, and that a claim by them for recoupment of their expenses is under consideration.

Mr. Byrne

Does the Minister approve of no value being placed on a woman's life? Does he place no value on the woman as a housekeeper to her husband?

That does not arise.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Minister not reconsider it, in view of the woman's value as a housekeeper?

The law does not permit it.

Mr. Byrne

So the Minister puts no value on her?

That is not so.
