Vol. 89 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Meals Acts.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health (1) if he will state the numbers of schools and of children now availing of the benefits of the Schools Meals Acts; and (2) whether he proposes to extend the benefits of the Acts to schools not at present participating in the scheme.

During the year ended 31st March, 1942—the latest period for which full particulars are available— school meals were provided in 315 schools in urban areas and towns under town commissioners. The average daily number of children in receipt of meals during that year was 45,934. During the same period, meals were provided in 300 schools under the School Meals (Gaeltacht) Scheme to an average daily number of 15,200 children. The initiative in regard to putting in force the Education (Provision of Meals) Acts rests with the local authority.
