Vol. 89 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - The Butter Ration.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware of the hardship imposed on the public by the inadequate butter ration, and whether he hopes to increase the ration; and, if so, when.

Butter is at present rationed only in the Dublin and Bray areas. I do not regard the weekly allowance of a ½ lb. per head as inadequate, and I am not aware that it is imposing any undue hardship. As it is necessary to conserve stocks during the summer in order to ensure an adequate reserve for the winter months, it is not possible, in the light of anticipated production, to increase the present ration without risking a serious scarcity in next winter.
