Vol. 89 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Offaly Turf Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he has received a complaint from the district organiser of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union concerning his action in holding up the operation of a wages agreement made by the Turf Development Board with men employed by them at a quarry at Edenderry, County Offaly; whether he will state the reason for his interference in a case of this kind, or whether he will now withdraw his opposition to the operation of the increased rates of pay granted to those concerned.

I have no record of the receipt of the complaint referred to by the Deputy; nor am I aware of any wages agreement having been entered into between the Turf Development Board, Limited, and workers employed at a quarry in Edenderry.

I should like to say, Sir, that this question was delivered by me to the Minister for Local Government and Public Health, and evidently was then transferred to the Minister for Supplies. I am not, therefore, accusing the Minister for Supplies of not giving the proper answer to the question, but what I want to know is whether such a complaint, which was addressed to the Minister for Local Government and Public Health by the district organiser of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, was received by that Department, and whether this is just a question of "passing the buck", or did the Minister for Local Government and Public Health interfere in the matter in any unauthorised way?
