Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Councils' Turf Production.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state in respect of each county council the amount of the overdraft for the purpose of turf production on 31st December, 1942; and the total of these overdrafts.

The information is compiled in the form of a tabular statement which will be circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state in respect of each county council (1) the total quantity of turf sold by the county council to Fuel Importers, Limited, and (2) the price per ton (a) in the year ended 31st March, 1942; (b) in the nine months ended 31st December, 1942; and (c) in the three months ended 31st March, 1943; and the total quantity so sold in each period.

A tabular statement containing the information will be circulated with the Official Report. The particulars have been obtained from Fuel Importers, Limited.

The prices per ton shown in above statement are those applicable at the close of the periods referred to. The actual cost cannot be determined until the full tonnage of turf produced is ascertained by actual disposal. The realised tonnage is generally below the estimated quantity produced owing to disintegration due to weather conditions, wastage in movement, and segregation of turf not considered suitable for export to non-turf areas.

The prices shown are not therefore final and will require to be adjusted under the Government guarantee against loss by county councils on turf produced for use outside the county.
