Vol. 89 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castlekelly Bog.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that residents in Templeogue have for some years past been cutting turf on the Cobbe estate, Castlekelly, and that this year the Dublin County Manager has refused these people licences, after holding their applications until it was too late to look for alternative sites; if the Minister will state whether there is sufficient turf in Castlekelly bog for the next 50 years; and, if so, what is the reason for this attitude.

The Deputy will appreciate, so far as my Department is concerned, the view must be that county councils undertaking turf production are responsible in the first place for meeting their own fuel needs and those of institutions under their control. It is natural that Dublin County Council should look to the County Dublin bogs for producing its requirements. At the same time, it is desirable that private persons who wish to engage in turf production should be accommodated as far as possible. I am accordingly making inquiries into the matter and will communicate with the Deputy.
