Vol. 89 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arrests in Donegal.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that it was announced in Belfast that 11 men alleged to have escaped from internment in Northern Ireland were arrested by Gárdaí in County Donegal; and, if so, whether he will indicate the grounds for their arrest.

The 11 men arrested in County Donegal on 20th March were taken into custody by the Gárdaí under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939. The Gárdaí had reason to believe that the men were members of an unlawful organisation, and that they had firearms at their disposal.

Of the 21 men who escaped from Derry Prison on 20th March 15 have been arrested by the Gárdaí. Fourteen have been made the subject of detention orders under Emergency Powers (No. 20) Order, 1940. Eight of these men have appealed against detention and four of them have been released on giving written undertakings not to take part in future in the activities of any unlawful organisation. The appeals from the other four are under consideration.
