Vol. 89 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Butter Supply at Social Functions.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that notwithstanding the butter shortage large quantities of butter are available at dances and entertainments in various parts of the country; whether in particular he is aware that two stone of butter was provided for use at a dance held in Templemore on February 17th last; and whether he will indicate what regulations now apply to the supplying of butter, tea and sugar for use at such functions.

Butter is at present rationed only in the Dublin and Bray areas and, in so far as these areas are concerned, no butter is made available specifically for use at dances and entertainments.

In other parts of the country, deliveries of butter to traders by creameries were restricted under an Order made by the Minister for Agriculture. While I have no knowledge of the case referred to in the question, it is possible that promoters of dances and entertainments in the non-rationed area were able to procure butter for use at these functions. It is the intention to extend butter rationing to the whole country and the abuses to which the Deputy refers will be kept in mind in this connection.

With regard to tea and sugar, the position is that supplies of these commodities are not made available for use at dances and similar entertainments.
