Vol. 89 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supply of Cooking and Lighting Equipment.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will arrange, through the Irish representative in America, for the supply of gas piping and gun barrel for the fitting of houses, cottages and flats with essential gas cooking and lighting equipment in Dublin and other parts of Éire urgently in need of them.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will arrange for space on an Irish ship sailing from America to carry gas piping and gun barrel, if available, for the fitting of houses, cottages and flats with essential gas cooking and gas lighting equipment.

I will take questions Nos. 6 and 7 together. Representations were made some time ago through the appropriate channels to the U.S. authorities with regard to our requirements of pipes and tubes for such purposes as gas installations. It is not yet possible to say whether supplies will become available as a result but, if they do, the provision of shipping space for their importation will be arranged as circumstances permit.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Minister keep up the pressure? I wonder is he aware that a large number of the cottages recently built are without gas or electricity for cooking or lighting purposes and the occupants are not able to get paraffin oil or candles in adequate quantities? The Minister, I expect, will keep up the pressure.
