Vol. 90 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retired Civil Servants' Pensions.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance if he will cause the position of retired postal workers and other civil servants retired on small pensions to be reviewed with a view to granting them an allowance or increase in their pensions to enable them to meet the increase in the cost of living.

The general increase of pensions to which the Deputy refers would involve a large continuing addition to the existing heavy burden of pension charges, and I am unable to hold out any hope that it will be possible to grant it.

Mr. Byrne

Is the Minister aware that in at least one Department—the postal service—a big number of men have been retired at 65 years of age on pensions of less than £1 per week? I make an appeal to the Minister to reconsider the matter and to do something for them.

I could not do it for one Department without doing it for all.
