Vol. 90 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Military Service Pensions Act, 1934.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the reasons why the application of Mr. Adam Jones, Rosslare Strand, under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, was not granted and whether, as the facts concerning this man's activities in the struggle for freedom are well known to residents in the neighbourhood, he will have the case reopened and fresh evidence taken.

Mr. Adam Jones of Rosslare Strand was not granted a certificate under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934, because the Referee appointed under the Act reported that Mr. Jones is not a person to whom the Act is applicable. The extent of the applicant's military service with the forces, as adduced in evidence given before the Referee, was not such as to be deemed qualifying service under the Act. If, however, Mr. Jones is in a position to produce evidence which was not available prior to the making of the Referee's report but which has since become available, I will consider what further action, if any, can be taken in the matter.

Mr. Jones is in a position to produce evidence; he produced it long ago. Mr. Jones, who is a married man with a large family, was one of the unfortunate men who were led to believe that they were fighting for the freedom of Ireland and, taking everything into consideration, I think you ought to compensate him for the service he gave.
