Vol. 90 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Westmeath Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he will state if a decision has been reached to acquire for subdivision the lands at Nahod Moare and Fassagh, Mount Temple, Moate, County Westmeath, formerly in the occupation of Mr. James D'Arcy; whether he is aware that this estate was sold recently to Mr. Groake, solicitor, who with his brother owns a farm of almost 1,000 acres in an adjoining parish; that the lands in question, comprising over 300 acres, have remained untilled for almost 20 years, and that upwards of 60 landless men and smallholders in the neighbourhood are seeking land for tillage; that the men in question have objected to the sale of the estate; and whether, in the circumstances, he will take steps to secure the land for allocation amongst those people who are willing and able to work and till it.

Owing to the emergency conditions the Land Commission are not prepared to take any action at present regarding the acquisition of the lands at Nahod Moare and Fassagh, on the estate of James D'Arcy. Any transfer of ownership now would not prevent the possible exercise in future of the powers of the Land Commission to acquire the lands for division. The Land Commission have no knowledge of the present use of the lands by the owner. Any local objection to the sale of land by one person to another is not a matter for the Land Commission.
