Vol. 90 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soldiers and Agricultural Work.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state on what grounds he refused the discharge of Private McEvoy, Finglas, who applied for release to take up agricultural work, as agricultural workers are scarce in the area; and if he is prepared to reconsider his decision.

An application from Private Thomas McEvoy to be released from military service was duly investigated as a result of which it was considered that the grounds put forward by Private McEvoy in support of his application were not sufficient to justify his being released from service. The matter is being re-examined, however, and the Deputy will be informed of the decision as early as possible.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state on what grounds he refused the discharge of Sergeant Patrick Lambe, Kilworth Camp, County Cork, who applied on the grounds of work with his cousin, Andrew Mongey, Kinsealy, Malahide, who is an extensive tillage farmer; if he is aware that agricultural labour is scarce in this area; and if he is prepared to reconsider his decision accordingly.

Mr. Boland

On the 25th March last, Sergeant Lambe made application to be released from Army service. Inquiries were instituted as to the grounds on which the soldier sought to be so released and, following investigation of the circumstances, it was decided that sufficient justification did not exist to warrant his being released from Army service.

Further inquiries have now been made and, as it has been reported to my Department that there is not a shortage of agricultural labour in the area referred to, it is considered that the national interests would be best served by retaining Sergeant Lambe in military service.
