Vol. 90 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cottage Rent Arrears in Kerry.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that owing to a recent decision of the county manager for Kerry no portion of cottage rent arrears will be accepted unless the whole amount is cleared off; and whether, in view of the fact that many cottiers are unable to meet their total liability without getting time, he will exercise his authority to protect people from the harsh repercussions of such a policy.

The rent collection in County Kerry has been unsatisfactory for several years and although there has been some improvement in the position in the past two years the arrears outstanding at March last exceeded £16,000. The collection of the rents is a matter for the local authority and I have no power to intervene in regard to any action which the county manager may consider necessary to ensure a satisfactory collection of the arrears. From inquiries made I understand that there has been no decision not to accept portion of the rent arrears unless the whole amount is cleared off. It is understood that any reasonable proposal to pay off the arrears will be fully considered.
